The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB) NW Campus Summer Intensive and Repertory Experience Weeks give over 250 students from around the world the opportunity to study with our acclaimed faculty and company artists. TWSB provides a safe, nurturing environment enabling each student to explore their technical and artistic capabilities. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of young dancers to grow and expand to their full potential.
TWSB Summer Intensive
Ages: 12-22 (ages as of June 1, 2025)

The Washington School of Ballet NW Campus Summer Intensive gives students from around the world the opportunity to study for five weeks with our internationally recognized faculty, Artistic Director, Edwaard Liang, School Director, Trinidad Vives, and acclaimed guest artists. The Summer Intensive culminates in a studio showing for friends and family.
With over 30 hours of curriculum per week, the schedule includes classical ballet technique, pointe work, variations, men’s technique, pas de deux, flamenco, jazz, contemporary, character, body conditioning, repertory, and composition. Included in your tuition is access to on-site physical therapy appointments with our Restore Motion partners.

The Summer Intensive is the best way to be evaluated by our faculty and considered for TWSB’s Trainee Program or the Studio Company.

Level placement is determined the first day of the summer program. Students will be placed in an appropriate level determined by age and technical ability. Adjudicators responsible for summer student placement are TWSB full-time faculty.
Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet’s NW Campus Summer Intensive by attending an in-person audition on our tour OR submitting a video audition (see audition link below). Students attending our summer program who are also interested in enrolling in the 2025-2026 school year may request to be evaluated during summer classes. They do not need to attend a separate audition.

Dive into a week of unparalleled artistry with the TWB Repertory Experience guided by Artistic Director Edwaard Liang. Students have the chance to dance like a TWB company member starting the day with advanced technique and followed by repertory rehearsals in a professional company-style format. Select students from the Repertory Experience may be invited to join the Trainee Program or the Studio Company. Mark your calendar for an open rehearsal of company repertory on Friday, Aug 1.
Students must be accepted into The Washington Ballet Repertory Experience by audition and are strongly encouraged to attend the 5-week TWSB Summer Intensive immediately preceding in preparation for this company-style program.

Immerse yourself in a week of extraordinary artistry with the Junior Repertory Experience, guided by School Director Trinidad Vives. Aspiring young dancers will experience what it’s like to be part of The Washington Ballet, beginning each day with technique training and followed by intensive repertory rehearsals. Repertory will include classical ballet, contemporary ballet, and more! The program concludes with a special showing on Friday, June 20, where family and friends can see the hard work and progress on display.
Admission to The Washington Ballet Junior Repertory Experience is by audition only. Students are highly encouraged to join the 5-week TWSB Summer Intensive following this program to be considered for year-round placement in our training programs.

The Level 3 Summer Intensive is a challenging and enriching five-day-per-week, four-week Intensive for students wishing to expand their dance vocabulary, strengthen technique and refine pointe work. All classes are taught by TWSB’s esteemed faculty with a program designed by Pamela Bjerknes. At this important time in a young dancer’s training, students attend daily pointe, technique, repertoire, and contemporary classes. With an emphasis on classical ballet line and technique, the program offers a chance for students to expand their dance vocabulary in contemporary choreography and classical ballet repertoire. Strengthening and conditioning enrichment classes round out a busy week. Students must have previous pointe experience to attend. Level 3 Summer Intensive Repertoire Performance will take place during the last week of classes for family and friends.
The Level 3 Summer 2025 final performance will take place on Friday, July 18 at TBD in the Main Building at 3515 Wisc Ave NW.

The Young Dancer Summer Program is specially designed with the young dancer in mind. This four-week program incorporates technique while enriching and strengthening syllabus concepts in a professional and nurturing environment. Summer study builds on the essential elements of classical ballet technique while reinforcing the developmental needs of young dancers. Dancers become mischievous Nutcracker mice, elegant swans in Swan Lake, and dance at Aurora’s wedding in The Sleeping Beauty. Artistry and imagination come together when young dancers travel to the Land of Sweets, Swan Lake, and far away castles. Students will learn to tell the classical ballet stories through choreography and mime. Summer classes are a fun and enriching way to reinforce classwork syllabus skills, muscle memory and coordination. Ballet vocabulary, classical ballet alignment, balance and posture are emphasized.
The last week of classes students will share all they have learned in a short presentation for family and friends. Enrollment will be limited to ensure maximum individual attention to each student’s unique development and learning goals.

Creative Dance is designed to introduce young children to dance and creative movement using stories and guided improvisation. Children develop body awareness, increased strength, and motor coordination. Students exercise creativity, imagination, rhythm, and motion as they explore early dance concepts in a nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment. This class offers an excellent foundation and serves as a bridge into the Pre-Ballet Division.

Designed for our tiniest dancers and their parent or caregiver, these classes introduce our budding ballerinas to the joy of movement. Bond with your child while they practice coordination and socialization skills through music and play. One caregiver participant is required per student.

NW Summer Auditions (ages 12+)
Audition Tour for Summer Intensive & Repertory Experience Weeks
Ages 12+
Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet by attending an in-person audition or submitting a video audition. Students attending the summer intensive who are also interested in enrolling in the following school year will be evaluated during summer classes. They do not need to attend a separate audition. Audition Requirements
Advance registration is required for all in-person auditions at The Washington Ballet and walk-up registration will not be accepted. Students should register for auditions based on their age at the time of the audition.
All students auditioning for TWSB programs will be placed by ability and readiness for the TWSB syllabus.
- Dancers 12+ should have a minimum of 2-4 years of ballet training and Intermediate pointe work or have had 1-2 years of pointe.
- All auditions and placement classes carry a fee due at the time of registration.
Attire
- Female-identifying dancers should wear ballet shoes, a leotard, tights, and bring pointe shoes. No skirts or distracting embellishments.
- Male-identifying dancers should wear black tights, a white t-shirt, and black or white shoes.
Please remove all jewelry and be certain that the dancer’s hair is pulled away from their face and secured, preferably in a bun for female-identifying dancers.

NW Campus Video Auditions
Video auditions will be reviewed for Summer Intensive programs beginning in January, 2025. You may submit earlier, but please note that videos will not be reviewed until January. Video auditions will be accepted until April 20, 2025.
You may submit a video audition for the TWSB NW Campus Summer Intensive. Please follow these steps:
- Register for Video Auditions ($45) on the online registration portal.
- Check your email for a link to complete “Supplemental Forms”.
- Follow the link and prompts to complete your “Supplemental Forms” and you will be prompted to enter a video audition link.
- Add a video link from Vimeo or YouTube. Please make sure the video settings are set to public, or that you provide a valid password to view the video.
TWSB Summer Intensive (ages 12+) Video Auditions
Your recorded audition should be NO LONGER THAN 10 minutes and please include the following in your audition:
- Introduction: name, age, years, and place of study.
- Only one side of combinations at the barre and include: pliés, battement tendu, adagio, grand battement.
- In center (ladies on pointe) adagio, pirouettes en dehors and dedans, petit allegro, grand allegro, and a variation of choice. Gentlemen include tour en l’air (single or double depending on your age and ability level) and allegro that includes beats and grand pirouettes.

- Children age 11-12 should have a minimum 3 years ballet training. Students should be ready for beginner pointe work or have had 1 year of pointe.
- Children 13+ should have a minimum of 2-4 years of ballet training and Intermediate pointe work.
- All auditions and placement classes carry a fee due at the time of registration.
Attire
- Girls should wear a leotard, tights or white ankle socks (ages 4-6) and ballet shoes
- Students ages 7 and older should wear ballet shoes, a leotard, and tights.
- Students on pointe should bring pointe shoes. No skirts please or distracting embellishments.
- Boys should wear black tights, a white t-shirt, and black or white shoes.
If your child has never danced before, they may wear form-fitting clothing for the audition. It is important that our faculty be able to evaluate physical proportions. Please remove all jewelry and be certain that the student’s hair is pulled away from their face and secured, preferably in a bun for girls.

NW Campus Summer Auditions
Ages 8-12
Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet by attending an in-person audition or submitting a video audition. Students attending the summer intensive who are also interested in enrolling in the following school year will be evaluated during summer classes. They do not need to attend a separate audition. Advance registration is required for all in-person auditions at The Washington Ballet and walk-up registration will not be accepted. Students should register for auditions based on their age at the time of the audition.
All students auditioning for TWSB programs will be placed by ability and readiness for the TWSB syllabus.

Lower Division Summer Program 2025 Auditions
(ages 8-12 as of September 1, 2025)
All Lower Division auditions take place at the Main Building at 3515 Wisconsin Ave NW.

- Students age 8 auditioning for Lower Division should have 1-2 years of previous ballet training.
- Students age 8-9 with no previous experience will be placed by ability and readiness for the TWSB Syllabus.
- Ages 10-11 should have a minimum of 1-2 years of ballet training.
- Ages 11-12 should have a minimum 3 years ballet training. Students must have completed 6 months to 1 full year of pointe work by the summer session.

NW Campus Video Auditions
Your recorded audition should be NO LONGER THAN 10 minutes and please include either the following exercises for barre and center or exercises you are currently doing in your weekly class:
Ages 8-10
- Introduction: name, age, years, and place of study.
- Only one side of combinations at the barre and include: pliés, tendu, grand battement.
- In center: tendu, sauté in 1st position, changement, échappe, port de bras.
Ages 10-12
- Introduction: name, age, years, and place of study.
- Only one side of combinations at the barre and include: plié tendu, dégagé, ronds de jambe, passé relevé facing the barre.
- In center: tendu, adagio with developé or relevé lent, glissade, sauté 1st position, changement.
- If students have begun pointe, please include the following en pointe: At the barre – relevé in 1st and 5th positions, échappé, pas de bourrée, relevé passé.
