The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB) SE Campus Summer Intensive gives over 125 students from around the world the opportunity to study for four to five weeks with our acclaimed faculty. TWSB provides a safe, nurturing environment enabling each student to explore their technical and artistic capabilities. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of young dancers to grow and expand to their full potential.

With best-in-class ballet masters and instructors, and a curriculum 79 years perfected, The Washington School of Ballet sets a new standard in ballet education. In 2005, The Washington School of Ballet became a founding partner at THEARC. For 18 years, the SE Campus has served the East of the River Community with the expertise of the faculty, TWSB curriculum, and excellence in ballet training.

Our five-week Summer Intensive program for levels 3-5 and Teens includes classes in classical ballet technique, pointe, repertory, jazz, Horton technique, character, African dance and more. Classes meet Monday through Friday 9:00am – 3:00pm. Age is considered during placement; however, placement is primarily based on technical ability and appropriate strength for syllabus material. All students will participate in our final summer performance at the end of the program.

Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet by attending an in-person audition.

Students currently enrolled in TWSB’s school year DO NOT need to audition for the summer intensive and must use the direct link emailed to them to register. All students will continue at their current level for the Summer Intensive. After June 15, contact swiggins@washingtonballet.org to register.

The Young Dancer Summer Program is specially designed with the young dancer in mind. The four-week program incorporates technique while enriching and strengthening syllabus concepts in a professional and nurturing environment. Summer study builds on the essential elements of classical ballet technique while reinforcing the developmental needs of young dancers. All classes are taught by TWSB’s outstanding faculty. Class sizes are limited.      

This program includes Level 1A and 1B (2 times per week) and Level 2 (4 times per week).  Classes include ballet technique for all levels, plus jazz for Level 2.  Our Lower Division Summer Program will culminate in our Summer Showcase on July 18.

Pre-Ballet Summer Programs

Pre-Ballet 1 Classes: Tue/Thu 4:00-5:00  
Pre-Ballet 2 Classes: Tue/Thu 5:00-6:00  
Pre-Ballet 3 Classes: Tue/Thu 6:00-7:00

This is a four-week program designed exclusively to develop ballet vocabulary within the developmental framework of the young child. Exercises promote balance, posture, spatial awareness, and directional patterns, all tailored to strengthen and support muscle development. There is a focus on musicality and creative self-expression. Each class includes a stretch and strength component in addition to the instruction of classical technique. Enrollment will be limited to ensure maximum individual attention to each student’s unique development and learning goals. 

Pre-Ballet 1, Pre-Ballet 2, and Pre-Ballet 3 attend two times a week. The Pre-Ballet Division Summer Intensive will culminate in our Summer Showcase on July 18.

Creative Dance Summer Program

Ages: 3-5 (ages as of September 1, 2024)
Dates: June 23-July 18, 2025

Creative Dance A: Mon/Wed 4:15-5:00  

Tuition: $240 (Register by Mar 1 to receive 5% discount) 

This four-week program is designed to introduce young children to creative movement exploration using movement games, imagery, and guided improvisation. Children develop body awareness, increased strength, and motor coordination. Students will exercise creativity, imagination, rhythm, and motion as they explore early dance concepts in a nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment. This class meets twice per week during the summer and will culminate in our Summer Showcase on July 18.

SE Summer Auditions (ages 8+)

SE Campus Summer Auditions

Ages 8+

At THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Ave, SE, Suite 202, Washington, DC 20020

Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet by attending an in-person audition. Students attending the summer intensive who are also interested in enrolling in the following school year will be evaluated during summer classes. They do not need to attend a separate audition.

All students auditioning for TWSB programs will be placed by ability and readiness for the TWSB syllabus.

  • Children age 3-7 may be registered without an audition.
  • Children age 8-9 with no previous experience will be placed by ability and readiness for the TWSB Syllabus.
  • Children ages 10-11 should have a minimum of 1-2 years of ballet training.
  • Children age 11-12 should have a minimum 3 years ballet training. Students should be ready for beginner pointe work or have had 1 year of pointe.
  • Children 13+ should have a minimum of 2-4 years of ballet training and Intermediate pointe work.
  • All auditions and placement classes carry a fee due at the time of registration.

Attire

  • Girls should wear a leotard, tights or white ankle socks (ages 4-6) and ballet shoes
  • Students ages 7 and older should wear ballet shoes, a leotard, and tights.
  • Students on pointe should bring pointe shoes. No skirts please or distracting embellishments.
  • Boys should wear black tights, a white t-shirt, and black or white shoes.

If your child has never danced before, they may wear form-fitting clothing for the audition. It is important that our faculty be able to evaluate physical proportions. Please remove all jewelry and be certain that the student’s hair is pulled away from their face and secured, preferably in a bun for girls.

In-Class Auditions for ages 8-18 (ages as of September 1, 2024)
Request to schedule an in-class audition January 6 – May 9, 2025. Once an online registration is created, please reach out via email to twsbse@washingtonballet.org to schedule an in-class audition. In-class auditions are not available after May 9.
