Mané Rebelo-Plaut, born in Portugal, studied gymnastics for several years before enrolling at the School of the Lisbon Dance Company, where she studied ballet, jazz, and modern. She danced with the Lisbon Dance Company for five years, performing leading roles in works by Rui Horta, Mark Haim, Igal Perry, Monica Levy, and David Parsons, among others. In New York City, Ms. Rebelo-Plaut studied ballet under Igal Perry, Finis Jhung, Kim Abel, and Maggie Black. She trained in pointe technique at the Joffrey Ballet School. In addition, she studied the modern techniques of Jennifer Muller, Lar Lubovitch, and Paul Taylor.
In New Jersey, Ms. Rebelo-Plaut danced with Nicholas Rodriguez and DanceCompass, performing principal roles in various works by the director. She also was featured in Paul Taylor’s “Aureole.” She performed at The Yard at Martha’s Vineyard, was principal dancer in an Off-Broadway show, and worked as Production Assistant for the Joffrey Ballet.
In Washington, D.C., she has danced with Eric Hampton Dance, Bowen McCauley Dance, DC Dance Theater, The Washington Opera, and The Folger Consort. Ms. Rebelo-Plaut performed in Washington Ballet’s “Ballets from Within” and Dance Place’s “New Releases” program, performing a duet choreographed by her husband, Roger Plaut.
Ms. Rebelo-Plaut has taught jazz and modern throughout Portugal and in high schools in New Jersey. She has taught ballet, floor barre, modern, and stretch at the Washington School of Ballet. She has been a substitute teacher for American University, Montgomery College, and the Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet, and has choreographed for the National Cathedral School. Ms. Rebelo-Plaut has also taught at Joy of Motion Dance Center, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Terry’s School of Dance, Jane Bittner’s Dance Center, MINT Fitness, and American Dance Institute, as well as company classes for Ballet Preljocaj at the Kennedy Center. In addition to the Washington School of Ballet, she currently teaches in the Dance Department at the University of Maryland and at Maryland School of Dance. She and her husband enjoy dancing ballroom and West Coast Swing; together, they teach group and private ballroom lessons and prepare wedding couples for their first dance. Outside the dance world, Ms. Rebelo-Plaut has a degree in Interior Design and operates her own business, MRP Design Studio.
