Kjara Wurst

Kjara Wurst is a Slovene choreographer, teacher, and artistic director of Kjara’s Dance Project.

She completed her formal training with the Slovene National Ballet Conservatory. After continuing to study with her mentor Fred Lasserre, she joined SPP Dance Company under his artistic direction. Working with numerous Slovene choreographers, she toured internationally performing at Festival d’Avignon (France), Vienner Festwochen (Austria), Bonner Bienale (Germany), Bologna Festival (Italy), Intercult (Sweden), Marato (Spain), Lent Festival (Slovenia), Cankarjev dom (Slovenia), Slovene National Ballet (Slovenia, Maribor), NY Summer Stage (USA), and La Mente Artistica (Italy).

Early on she has discovered her big passion for choreography, teaching, and mentoring young dancers. She choreographed for the Slovene National Ballet, The Washington Ballet, KDP Contemporary Ballet, Anton Podbevšek Teater, Dissonance Dance Theatre, Danzante Dance Company, The Washington School of Ballet, University of Minnesota, Slovene National Ballet Conservatory, CAD, and Triennale di Milano.

In 2010 she founded KDP, a project based contemporary ballet company for young dancers, to create more opportunities for stage experience and her dancers/students have gone on to perform with the Batsheva Ensemble (Tel Aviv), Vertigo (Jerusalem), IT Dansa (Barcelona), Ecole Rudra, Bejart (Lausanne), National Ballet Theatre (Slovenia), and Ballet Junior de Geneva (Switzerland).

At The Washington School of Ballet, she is teaching contemporary and choreography composition, while regularly choreographing pieces for the showcases.

She has also taught at George Mason University, Metropolitan School of The Arts, Maryland Youth Ballet, the Slovene National Ballet Conservatory, University of Minnesota, TU Dance, St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts, Kaos Balletto di Firenze, DDT, Torino Centro di Danza, Slovene College for Ballet, Slovene Performing Arts School for Contemporary Dance, Scuola di Danza Balletto di Roma, Laban, The Washington Ballet Summer Intensive, Ariston Proballet Summer Intensive, JSKD Winter Intensives, Vibra International Dance Workshops and many other schools and workshops in Europe and the US.

She holds a formal Status of Choreographer and Educator by Slovene Ministry of Culture.
