Brittany Bailey graduated high school from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she studied in both the ballet and modern dance departments under the direction of Melissa Hayden and Brenda Daniels. Following graduation Bailey moved to New York City in 2008 to train on a full scholarship in Merce Cunningham’s professional training program. Bailey has performed at MoMA with Yvonne Rainer in the exhibition Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done (2018) and in Marina Abramović’s retrospective The Artist is Present (2010). In 2011, Bailey was a member of the Michael Clark Company for performances at the Tate Modern in London. Bailey has also performed for Robert Wilson and has traveled with the Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi Order. Bailey’s own choreographic works have been presented at Judson Church, NADA Art Fair, Pioneer Works, the Watermill Center, and the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, among others. Bailey graduated from Columbia University in May ‘23 where she majored in Anthropology and Philosophy. While at Columbia, Bailey worked as a research assistant in Columbia’s Couples Lab, was awarded the John Claflin Scholarship as well as the Ella Deloria Undergraduate Fellowship, and was inducted into the General Studies Honor Society. Bailey is authorized to teach, stage, and perform Yvonne Rainer’s iconic dance, Trio A, and is currently training to become authorized to teach the Merce Cunningham Technique. Bailey is honored to join the faculty at the Washington School of Ballet and looks forward to the year ahead!
