Sonia DeVille

A proud Cajun from Ville Platte, Louisiana, Sonia graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Dance from University of Southerwestern Louisiana in 1994 and was recognized as being among the top 5 graduates in the College of the Arts. She went on to complete her Masters of Fine Arts in Dance from Florida State University and also received an Associate of Arts in Business Administration from Keiser College. Sonia has been involved in all forms of dance since age 4 as a dancer, dance educator, dance teacher, performer, and choreographer with emphasis on modern and ballet. She has performed in traditional, alternative and site-specific venues.

Sonia has been in the fitness industry for 30 years which includes Polestar Pilates Certified Practitioner for Post Rehabilitation, American College of Sports and Medicine Certified Health and Fitness Specialist, Total Gym GAVITY Master Trainer, TRX Instructor, and HKC certified. Since 2000 she has been with Body Dynamics, Inc., an integrated physical therapy and wellness practice with a team of more than 25 multidisciplinary professionals, in Falls Church, Virginia. She is a Senior Fitness Associate, personal and group fitness instructor, and directs the internal cross-disciplinary educational seminar series (BDI-University) and also The Washington School of Ballet Pilates Dance Conditioning Program for their yearly pre-professional and summer programs.

Sonia has been involved in Dance Medicine for the past 20 years as a Dance Educator and as a love for working with various artists from all areas of dance. She has presented numerous movement sessions and lectures for dancers and dance teachers as well as Pilates Instructors in Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. She is part of the BDI Health and Wellness Program at The Washington school of Ballet which provides yearly screening for The Washington Ballet Company. She studies neuromuscular training yearly with Irene Dowd in New York City and attends international and national conferences. She has been teaching at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia since 2005 teaching Intro to Contemporary Movement Theories (Bachelor in Fine Arts), Advance Teaching Methods (Master of Fine Arts), and individual dance analysis and conditioning as well as being a committee member for Master of Fine Arts Thesis Dissertation. She has been a member of International Association of Dance Medicine and Science since 2001 and on the Dance Sciene and Somatic Educators Committee (chair 2008). She has written on Posture and Pilates for Body Dynamics 2010 newsletter, was featured in Mason Spirit Spring 2011 “Dancing with Purpose”, co-presented a 2012 webinar on “Gravity Training Inside a Physical Therapy and Fitness Center”, co-wrote Dance Magazine 2013 “Plyometrics for Dancers”, and co-presented “Standardized Program for Hip Recover” at 2013 IADMS conference in Seattle WA.

She has also lectured, taught master classes, and courses at University of Maryland University College, American University, Director of Children’s Dance at Bainbridge College Georgia, Florida State University Dance Department, Urban Bush Women intensive summer dance program, BalletNova, Metropolitan School of Dance, and American Dance Institute. She has performed with Sister’s Trousers, K-2 Modern Dance Company, Bosmadance, VA Civic Ballet Dance Company, Women’s Dance Project, FSU Dance Repertory Theatre, Moving South Dance Company, and USL State La Dance. She has performed works by Isadora Duncan Foundation, Shapiro & Smith, Urban Bush Women, Eiko & Komo, Mark Taylor, Martha Graham, Donald McKayle, Doris Humphrey, Jennine Willett, Tom Pearson, and Linda Davis. Since moving to the DC area she has performed at Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, Jack Guidone Theater, Dance Place, Joy of Motion, Alexandria Festival of the Arts, Masonic Temple, Joe’s Dance Emporium, and at the Common Wealth Performance Festival. She has choreographed and presented her own works in Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Utah. She has also choreographed and performed numerous Theatre productions including Misanthrope, Fools, Madame Butterfly, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Christmas Carol. Her ballet repertory includes such dances such as Les Sylphide, Swan Lake, Giselle, Raymonda, Pas de Quatre, La Bayadere, and The Nutcracker.
