PETITE MORT

October 22-26, 2014 | 7 Performances

Harman Center for the Arts

THREE COMPANY PREMIERES

Petite Mort by Jiří Kylián

5 Tangos by Hans van Manen

Polyphonia by Christopher Wheeldon

Experience three of Europe’s most powerful ballet geniuses and their striking masterpieces never before performed by The Washington Ballet. Petite Mort is Jiri Kylián’s masterwork. Haunting, joyfully witty and provocative, Septime Webre declares its ‘pas de deux’ “the most innovative [he] has ever encountered.” One of the Fathers of the ‘Dutch’ movement, Hans van Manen tears down the walls between ballet and contemporary dance. Sexy, short and exhilarating, his 5 Tangos is a sizzling work that combines ballet with the passion and dramatic flair of tango. Polyphonia was Christopher Wheeldon’s breakout piece for New York City Ballet in which he won the Critics’ Circle Award and an Olivier Award. In the spirit of Balanchine, Wheeldon’s choreography of great subtlety and elegance with dynamic and varying moods is set to Ligeti’s virtuoso piano music. This program features live music.

Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Astor Piazzolla, György Ligeti
Choreography: Petite Mort/ Jiří Kylián, 5 Tangos/ Hans van Manen, and Polyphonia/ Christopher Wheeldon
