The Washington School of Ballet's Summer Intensive gives students from around the world the opportunity to study with the School's acclaimed faculty. The Summer Intensive offers a four-week course of study for beginning students and a five-week course for intermediate and advanced students.To see a sample schedule, please click HERE.

Current/Year-round Students of The Washington School of Ballet

Students currently enrolled in The Washington School of Ballet’s 2007-2008 School Year DO NOT need to audition for the summer intensive. You simply need to fill out a REGISTRATION FORM (download here) and return in to School Manager, Donna Glover, by March 8, 2008 with a $300 deposit ($150 for Pre-Ballet) . All students will continue in their current level for the summer intensive. The remainder of the tuition is due May 1 st, 2008.

Auditions

Please note that auditions for the 2008 Summer Intensive are now closed.

Students are accepted into The Washington School of Ballet’s Summer Intensive by audition only. Students may audition either by attending an audition class or by submitting a video audition. Students attending an audition class need to bring a headshot and full body shot (in any ballet position) to their audition.There is a $20 fee for the audition class.

Auditions at The Washington Ballet Studios have now been concluded.

Video Audition: Tapes/DVD's should be no longer than 10 minutes and must include an introduction with name, age, years of study and places of study. Students must submit an audition form, check for $20 made out to The Washington Ballet, photograph and one letter of recommendation from your teacher in the video package. The video should have center work including adagio, pirouettes en dehors and en dedans, petit allegro, grand allegro, and pointe work for the girls. Male students should include tour en l'air, single or double depending on age and level and entrechat quatre or entrechat six. Videos must be in regular VHS format. Video auditions in any other format will not be considered.

Students attending an audition class need to bring a headshot and full body shot (in any ballet position) to their audition.

Curriculum

LOWER DIVISION (June 23-July 18)

Upon acceptance into our lower division summer intensive, students will be notified of their level placement. Please note that placement is based on ability and is up to the discretion of the faculty. Parents are invited to observe classes on July 18 th.

Pre-Ballet Level

  • Meets Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • 4:30-5:30pm Ballet Class
  • Tuition: $290 for the 4 week session

Level 1

  • Meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • 5:30-6:45pm Ballet Class
  • Tuition: $490 for the 4 week session

Level 2

  • Meets Monday-Friday (5 days a week)
  • 3:45-5:15pm Ballet Class, 5:15-6:30pm Other Class
  • Tuition: $760 for the 4 week session
  • In addition to ballet classes the students will receive instruction in

Musical Theater, Jazz, Stretch, and Character/Flamenco

Level 3

  • Meets Monday-Friday (5 days a week)
  • 9:30am - 4:30pm (3 classes per day)
  • Tuition: $1,330 for the 4 week session
  • In addition to ballet classes students will receive instruction in

Pointe, Musical Theater, Jazz, Stretch, Character/Flamenco,

Music Theory, Ballet History and Terminology

 

UPPER DIVISION (June 23-July 25)

Upon acceptance into our upper division summer intensive students will not be assigned a specific level. Level placement will be determined on the first day of class so as to accurately assess the child’s most recent ability level. Parents are invited to observe classes July 23 rd-25 th and to attend the culminating performance.

Levels 4, 5, 6, 7

  • Meet Monday-Friday (5 days a week)
  • 9:30am -6:00pm (varies depending on level and day by 45 minutes)
  • Tuition: $1899 for the 5 week session
  • In addition to ballet classes the students will receive instruction in most of the following (varies slightly from level to level):

-Pointe -Men’s Classes

-Repertoire -Jazz

-Pas de Deux -Variations

-Character/Flamenco -Pilates

  • Included in the tuition is access to The Washington School of Ballet’s Training Room and appointments with our athletic trainer
  • The 5 week program culminates with performances in our England Studio Theater on July 24 th and 25 th.

Dress Code

Jazz shoes, character shoes, and a character skirt (circular skirt, knee-length or a bit longer) are required for students in Levels 2 through 7.

Ladies:

Pre-Ballet: white leotard, white ankle socks, and pink ballet slippers.

Level 1 and up: black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers.

*Levels 3 and up will need pink pointe shoes

*Levels 4 and up will need black tights and a short black ballet skirt for the workshop performance

Gentlemen:

Pre-Ballet: white fitted t-shirt, black bike shorts, white lightweight socks, and white ballet shoes.

Level 1 and up: white men’s cap-sleeve leotard, black tights, white lightweight ankle socks, white ballet shoes.

 

  • Ladies’ hair must be secured in a bun at ALL times. If hair is short, a white headband will be necessary. No hair accessories (scrunchies, bun-covers, etc) should be on or around your bun. Students should have extra hair pins, hair elastics, and hair gel/spray to secure their hair.
  • No jewelry allowed except stud earrings. Do not bring valuables to the studio! WSB is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Ladies in pointe shoes MUST have a needle, thread, scissors, water-proof tape, and band aids with them AT EVERY pointe class. Students must be able to get into their shoes within a 5 minute time frame. PRACTICE!
  • Students must wear street-clothes cover-ups AT ALL TIMES outside The Washington School of Ballet building.

Scholarships

The School offers a limited amount of scholarships during the summer program. Scholarships are merit-based and are awarded at the time of acceptance. Students wishing to accept a scholarship award must notify the School of their intent to attend the program by March 22, 2008.

Performances

Lower Division parents are invited to watch the last day of classes on July 18 th. Students will showcase the various genres of dance that they have studied during their 4 week intensive

Upper Division parents and family members will be invited to observe the last three days of classes (July 23-25) and to attend a performance on the last two days of the summer session.

Housing

Housing is available for students ages 13 and above in Levels 4 through 7 on the campus of George Washington University located near The Washington School of Ballet. The housing fee of $1899 includes a double or triple room with a kitchen and bathroom. Meals are not included but each room features a full kitchenette with a microwave and oven for students to prepare their own meals. Grocery stores are easily accessible. An optional dinner plan is offered and is strongly recommended.

Each dorm floor is supervised by TWSB chaperones. The Washington School of Ballet is very proud to employ chaperones with college degrees who are still actively pursuing a career in the dance field. There is 1 chaperone per every 12-15 students ensuring that each student is well-supervised. Chaperones arrange weekend activities including trips to the zoo, the Smithsonian, the monuments, and other Washington DC attractions.

For the 2008 Summer Program students will be housed in George Washington University's Munson Hall. This building is conveniently located across the street from a metro station at 2212 Eye Street, NW, Washington, DC 20052.
